Vienna aus Berlin legen wohl momentan einen der Upstarts überhaupt hin. Kein Wunder, denn die ersten 2 Song “A Tourist” und “Blood” (Beide als kostenloser Download erhältlich) zeugen von einer ungewöhnlich guten Qualität. Grund genug das mal unter die Lupe zu nehmen. Hier also ein kleiner Gästebeitrag/Interview von und mit Vienna. Über das, was Vienna eigentlich ist, sein will, das außergewöhnliche Soundkonzept und vielem mehr.
VIENNA versucht mit der Musik, Bilder, Videos und Texten eine sehnsüchtige Welt zu schaffen, eine Welt wo man mit nostalgischem Rückblick seine Vergangenheit blicken kann aber auch glücklich sein, dass man ist, wo man ist. Es geht mehr um dieser Welt als die Mitglieder der Band, die das schaffen.
Die würden die Musik als minimalistische und nostalgische Electronica bezeichnen, die ist dabei sehr leise und intim.
Your Sound ist a very minimal and nostalgic way of electronica. What were you influenced by while creating your songs? How do you assemble that?
Vienna takes a lot of influences from 90s RnB and Hip Hop, we like using vocal loops as drum loops and sampling from sounds we record ourselves. We like film soundtracks a lot, how they are used to perfect a scene or to evoke emotion, so we like to try to achieve the same thing without pictures.
You’ve got only 2 songs online. Will there be an Album or EP coming soon?
We already have an album recorded which we plan to release later this year. Patience is a virtue.
What does your band name (especially to you) mean? How did you find it?
We were in Vienna when we came across a Klimt painting called „Life and Death“ in the Leopoldmuseum and I spent half an hour staring at it. I never really understood Klimt before – it all seemed to beautiful, pretty and golden and so very distant from the ugly side of life I have experienced. This painting was filled with so much sadness and nostalgia, and as I stood there looking at it, the idea to start making a musical collective that could achieve the same feelings that painting gave me just wandered into my head.
You are into DIY (Do-It-Yourself), aren’t you?
Yes. We write, record, produce and master the music ourselves. For the visual side we have been lucky enough to work with some incredibly talented individuals who helped realise our ideas in a way we found fitting.
What’s your special attribute?
People nowadays always need to protect their ideas by putting them in a context which conforms to what is currently in vogue, usually using the members of the band to fit to a certain image. Vienna removes it’s members from the foreground to make space for the characters and stories in the songs and videos. It has nothing to do with ego. This is not your typecast band.
